Disney World

Our only character visit (thank goodness!)

We couldn't have had a more perfect trip to Disney World. The surprise was so fun. We met them in the main office, Roxcy seemed confused, Jonah didn't even seem curious. We waited until we were in the car to tell them, "You're not going back to school today. We are driving to the airport, getting on an airplane and going to Disney World . . ." It took a few minutes for their brains to catch up. Jonah asked if he was going to go to school tomorrow and if not was he going to go to school in Florida? Roxcy was concerned about Nibbles, but we assured her that she was well taken care of. Then it hit and they screamed and we started talking about all the things we were going to do. I brought maps for them to look at on the plane and we found all the rides we wanted to go on. After the plane ride, waiting for the rental car and driving to the hotel we were glad to get there and get settled. We picked a great hotel for us; 2 separate bedrooms, really close to Disney and free breakfast in the mornings.

The next morning we went to the Magic Kingdom. There were no crowds. We barely waited in line for rides. The kids (and adults) loved Peter Pan, Dumbo, the Tea Cups, Thunder Mountain. They did NOT like getting wet on Splash Mountain. We loved Pirates of the Caribbean and trying to spot Jack Sparrow. Their favorite ride was Buzz Lightyear. How genius, combining a video game and a ride! The next day we visited Animal Kingdom and the third day we went back to Magic Kingdom. The weather was amazing, not to hot, not to cold, not rainy.

The most random thing happened while we were at the Magic Kingdom the first day. While coming to meet me Josh ran into some old friends of ours from Denver, George and Anna Hampton. We haven't seen them since we moved 2 1/2 years ago. They had since moved and we kind of lost track of each other. We had breakfast with them the next morning and had fun catching up and seeing how their kids had grown.

Unfortunately the food at Disney World is pretty sad. Think McDonalds or Wendys and then go one step down. The strip our hotel was on didn't offer anything better, lots of Chinese and pizza all-you-can-eat buffets, fast food and "American" restaurants. We did have dinner one night at the Kobe Japanese Steakhouse, where they cook dinner at your table and the chef does cute tricks with knives and food. We all liked that and got way too full. I will be dreaming about one food item though. In the Magic Kingdom, just as you are leaving Adventureland there is a Dole pineapple stand. You can get amazing pineapple floats; pineapple juice with soft serve pineapple ice cream. They were really good.

As we were coming home we asked the kids what their favorite moment of the trip was and they said, "When you surprised us." I wouldn't change a thing about the trip, we had so much fun that it's hard to be back in freezing New York.

I'm so glad it turned out so good--it was great to imagine all the fun you were having. Thanks for sharing the surprise with us, so we could participate vicariously! Funny thing about the food--I thought Disney's food used to be pretty good--but the Thanksgiving hmaburgers we had there were really disappointing--have they gone downhill or have our tastes improved?

I was fighting back the tears reading about how excited the kids were, and how much fun you all had. Must be the pregnancy hormones. :)
SO FUN!!!!

Reading and Disneyland, the top two things I couldn't wait to share with my kids when they were born. We need to go again.

I love that your kids favorite part was the surprise. That's so great. I would have to agree about the food at Disney. Last time we went we just brought lots of snacks and pb&J for lunch and then had dinner out of the park. Thanks for reminding us, we will now remember to prepare when we go in a few weeks. Shayne also like your idea about having maps for the kids to look at (and plan a strategy) on the way getting there. Good thinking. You guys are so neat.
