Apple Picking at Riiska Farms

We had a great time apple picking on Saturday. We went to a orchard in Western MA, very low key, no carnival or spectacle. The kids loved chasing the farm dog around the orchard. We got some great varieties, Fuji, Macoun and Spencer for eating and Cortland and Ida Reds for baking. I've never had an Ida Red before, but apparently they last a long time. We put them in an apple pie and they were really good! I'm looking forward to making:

My favorite apple pie

pink applesauce (leave peels on apples when you cook them, then puree in a blender or food processor, they'll give the applesauce a pink or red color, depending on the color of the skins.)

German apple pancakes

Apple pumpkin muffins

Caramel apples

What are your favorite apple dishes?

I like apple desserts--pie, cobbler, baked apples--warmed in a little bowl with half and half poured in the bottom. I think it's a British custom.

Your outing looks idyllic.

I made apple Strudel Yesterday and I think it was quite tasty. It was Carol Orteli's recipe. But I like all things Apple. When my family lived on the apple orchard in Payson I liked the fall because my mom would make a big pot of carmel and we would around dipping apples. every Bite was full of carmelly goodness. Please ignore spelling errors I find it unfair that this function has no spell check.
