Winter Fruit

My two favorite fruits are in season right now. I love, love, love grapefruits and they are especially juicy and mellow and good right now. Try sprinkling a cut and sectioned half generously with brown sugar and placing it under the broiler for about 5 minutes. The sugar melts and the juices juice and it's so satisfying.

Barlett, Red, Green, Bosc, Asian. I love them all. This is my pear "trick" I discovered this year (I'm really proud of this trick): You can't find a ripe pear in the grocery store, or if you do, you probably don't want to purchase it. Pick ones that are firm, have even coloring and few blemishes. Put them in your fridge and then eat all the other fruit you bought that will go bad. By about mid to end-week you'll think you are fruitless and then you'll remember the delicious pears ripening in your fridge. They'll be perfectly soft (not too soft) and juicy and sweet and you'll be so happy.

I just ate the most delicious ruby red grapefruit for breakfast this morning. I always forget to buy them, but when I do I'm am so happy. (I got it at TJ's.)

A#1 reason not to get high cholestrol---you can't eat grapefruit while taking statin drugs. Isn't that crazy?! so all of you who are still young and healthy keep eating your fruits and veggies---and never get your cholestrol checked!
