Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed!


Mom's Apple Crisp
8 c. apples, peeled and sliced
1/4 c. lemon juice
1 c. sugar
1/2 t. cinamon
1 c. water
Put ingredients in a 9x13, pour in water. Top with oatmeal topping:
1 1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 c. brown sugar
2 1/2 c. rolled oats
1 1/2 t. cinnamon
1/4 c. nonfat dry milk
1/2 t. ginger (optional)
1 c. cold butter
Mix ingredients. Cut in butter. Put on top of apple mixture. Bake 375 for 50 min.

My mom suggests using one of the following: jonathan, jonagold, granny smith, macintosh, rome beauty or other tart cooking apple.

I remember that record album cover, from elementary school I think! Since living here I've discovered a new kind of apple for pies: Northern Spy. If I can get some, I'll bring them at TG and we can try them out. The apple crisp looks great--so much like fall.
